The Pen Tool in AI does not have freeform like it does in Photoshop but
you can free hand trace it with Pencil tool which will convert your wobbly work into a smooth adjustable vector path. Best though is to learn the way of click n drag with the Pen tool which gives better control. Alternatively, if you have AI-cs2, you can use the new LiveTrace, which vectorises your Placed work accurately with a single click. |

I'd really reccomend using the pen tool as xy suggested though as this tool doesn't work well with multiple and blended shapes.
THe LiveTrace tool in cs2 is located in the objects menu

and you probably have to play with the options a bit to get it right but it does look like it worls fairly well. If you want to be able to manipulate the vector then choose the trace with LivePaint option.
Here's a pic of my avatar after using the trace tool in cs2 and then converting to LivePaint.

It puts all the hours I used to spend using the pen tool to vectorize pictures to shame.... |

Also new in IllustratorCS2 is 3d extrusion, where you turn say, a square into a cube, paint each side and revolve it. |

|
| Sponsor | xyzzyplugh | Jan 10, 2006 9:52am | | i haven't seen Flash Thlayli, but i do know the AI-Livetrace is pretty well instant and can do from line art bmp to full color photo jpeg, then of course every stroke and edge from orig becomes adjustable paths. |
